Everything Needs Oil (In Collaboration with Sam Sincuba), 2013

I was invited to participate in a group exhibition at Galerie Sanaa. The specialise in "African art" and their theme was "Slavery". I found this curious. First the simultaneous fetishisation of slavery by the dutch and the inability to sit and confront its implications. Also, the awkwardness of the black artist who is expected to perform or ignore racial histories for entertainment. Peace of mind.

For the performance, I wanted to create an installation while the audience watched. Ambiguously centre the performer, the viewer, the victim, the oppressor, the victim, the hero ambiguously between old, new, African, western, high or low art.
